That Bitter Well

The last thing Asterin heard was the satisfying crash of the Reliquary’s portcullis clattering into the grate. It was a sound that should’ve been shoved into the periphery of his mind, where he catalogued the familiar, turning it into nothing more than a flicker of recognition. Instead, he waited for it. Paused to appreciate the rattle of thick metal resonating across the otherwise cool, quiet night. It sounded like freedom.

He spurred Endarra into quick action, giving her little time to warm her tired limbs from the sudden demand. She was older now, the years slowing her where they’d strengthened him, and he tried not to ride her with the abandon he had in his youth. But if he didn’t put distance between himself and what had become his prison, the earth might swallow him whole and reclaim him for some better purpose.

When sounds faded to the gentle refrain of the forest’s nightlife, he paused to slip on Endarra’s hood in a loose fashion, as she liked it. She snuffed in gratitude, happy for relief from the snow that had escalated to a proper storm, more relentless than it had been all midwinter. It reminded him of Oldcastle, for both towns caught their tempests off both the Seven Sisters and the Easterland Range; both towns pretended as if each season with snow was something novel and not something they’d come to expect every year with the change of seasons.

The snow would abate by dawn. The storm in his head, however...

Asterin pulled his hood down over his face and rode for Parth.
